FAQs

  • The Hackney Solar Scheme is a pioneering scheme from Hackney Council. It has been set up to supply electricity to residents of council managed blocks direct from rooftop solar panels.

So far, the scheme is being piloted in three estates. Whiston, Frampton Park and Wrens Park. If you are a resident there you will no doubt have noticed the solar panels being installed on your rooftops.

  • By signing up you'll save money on your energy bills.

You’ll also be helping your neighbours and wider community across Hackney. The more people who sign up the more estates we will be able to roll it out to. That means more people can save money as well as helping save the planet.

On top of this you will be helping to put Hackney at the forefront of the UK's efforts on the climate emergency.

In short, you'll be saving money at the same time as speeding up action on the climate emergency in Hackney and across the country.

  • All residents should save money by signing up.

Exactly how much you will save depends on your current electricity tariff.

We estimate that some residents will enjoy savings of up to 15% versus the default energy tariff.

The default electricity tariff is set by the energy regulator Ofgem. It is the most common tariff in the country so it is likely that most residents are on it.

  • By signing up you will receive some of the greenest energy available.

Electricity generated directly from your rooftop like this doesn't need any additional infrastructure. We will even be using the existing wiring in the block.

Laying new cables or building new pylons to bring the green energy to you has a carbon cost. By generating your electricity locally we can remove that cost. No other energy supplier is currently able to do that.

Traditional energy suppliers buy electricity from generators across the country. They then sell it on to customers through the national grid.

    Our service is different

You will be using electricity generated literally on your rooftop from solar panels. So you'll know exactly where your electricity is coming from.

It's the greenest energy you can buy, as it only has to travel from your roof.

  • For this scheme, solar panels have been installed across the Whiston, Frampton Park and Wrens Park estates.

There are certain fixed costs involved in delivering the scheme, including the costs of connecting the solar systems to the electricity grid, and the cost of maintaining the solar panels.

This means that the more people sign up, the less each customer needs to pay towards these costs, and the more each customer will save on their energy bills.

  • Hackney Council’s goal is to scale this scheme up across homes across the borough.

By signing up, you will help show the scheme is working for residents and speed up the roll out across the borough.

  • This scheme is a leading national initiative.

Locally generated solar electricity is some of the greenest power available in the country. This is because it is generated directly from your rooftop. This means that we don't need new wiring, to lay new cables or to build new pylons to get it to you.

By becoming a Hackney Light & Power customer you will be helping this scheme to be a commercial success. That will mean that we will be able to set up many more schemes like it in Hackney and across the country.

That will help the whole country tackle the climate emergency and help to build a fairer world.

  • No. All we're asking you to do today is to let us know if you are interested in learning more.

If you are, fill in your details and we will be in touch soon. This will give you the opportunity to ask us any questions that you might have, as we can only cover so much here.

Only when you're fully comfortable that you want to take part will you be asked to formally sign up. 😊

  • No. We will be providing your entire electricity supply, in much the same way as you receive electricity from your supplier today.

The electricity you will receive will be a combination of the electricity generated from the solar panels installed on the roof of your apartment block, as well as electricity we source from the grid, which we'll be doing using the same wholesale energy supplier used by Hackney Council.

This means you will have access to electricity whenever you need it.

  • We would love to hear any questions that you have as there is only so much that we can cover here.

Just fill in your details in the form and add your question(s) at the end. That will enable us to get in touch with you to answer them directly.

  • Hackney has a reputation as an inclusive, creative and ambitious borough. It is an incredible place filled with incredible people.

By signing up you'll be helping us to do an incredible thing.

  • Hackney Light and Power is the clean energy services team of Hackney Council.  They have partnered with local energy specialist Emergent Energy to install and run this solar energy scheme.

  • Emergent Energy is a local energy specialist who specialise in providing solar energy for flats. Their innovations have created the system that enables you to receive electricity directly from the solar panels on the roof of your block of flats and credit it against your electricity bill. They will be your electricity supplier if you sign up to the scheme.

  • Up until now, people who live in flats haven't been able to use locally generated solar energy. That is down to how the energy market has been structured.

We though that was crazy and unfair, so we worked with Ofgem to change the system. We have now set out to change the energy market, one rooftop and one community at a time.

By signing up to be a customer you will be helping to create more schemes like this in the future.
